The Art of Truth Speech | Mattias Desmet

I recently met Mattias Desmet, a professor in clinical psychology at Ghent University. He became famous during the Covid period for his work on the concept of “mass formation psychosis.”

During Covid, massive populations got whipped up by the media into a self-destructive frenzy. People harmed themselves and their loved ones. A cloud of suspicion and paranoia descended upon the land. For several years, the most insane, neurotic behavior became “the new normal.” People were induced to do things that were against their own interests.

In this sit-down interview, I ask Desmet his interpretation of the events we lived through and his take on it as a clinical psychologist. Having now read many books on the madness of crowds, I was keen to hear his perspective.

Here are three key books to read on this subject:
Gustave Le Bon, The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind
Jacques Ellul, Propaganda: The Formation of Men’s Attitudes
Edward Bernays, Propaganda

Why do crowds behave mindlessly and how do the elites induce states of mass psychosis and focus and channel it away from them and towards self-destructive ends that give them more power and control over the population? Mattias Desmet breaks this process down and gives his solution…

It is the few brave souls who speak up who can save the society from destitution at the hands of a corrupt elite. And it is only their concerted dedication to continually speaking the truth that can save us. As Desmet calls it… TRUTH SPEECH.
