The executive arm of the State — the Government — is abusing the Office of the Attorney General by using the Chief State Solicitor’s Office (CSSO) to make State employees legally dependent on them for representation. This practice effectively places Gardaí, civil servants, and even judges under executive control, creating a conflict of interest that undermines the separation of powers guaranteed by the Constitution of Ireland. Members of An Garda Síochána and public officials accused of wrongdoing are being unlawfully represented by the CSSO, despite there being no constitutional or statutory authority permitting such representation in personal matters. This shields misconduct, silences accountability, and erodes the independence of those who should answer directly to the law — not to the Government. It is time to restore the balance of power and reaffirm that no one is above the law, not even those acting in the name of the State.
